How To Measure

Welcome! Following our easy step-by-step guide, you will learn how to quickly measure your windows to decide how much fabric (in inches) you'll require! Once you have taken down the width and height measurements, head on over to our products page, select your products and check the costs against your budget! It's THAT simple! Have fun with your home styling project!

Don't have the time to measure? Give us a call and we'll see if we can get someone over to your place to measure up the windows for you!

Before you begin, please make sure you are using a metal tape measure or similar, measuring in INCHES, double-checking all measurements and keeping a good record of measurements. Accessorize Hong Kong will not be responsible for any errors you make!

Fabric for Curtains

Ensure that before you start measuring, you affix the track or pole. If you do not currently have a track or pole, you will have to carefully estimate and allow for extra fabric.

The track or pole should extend beyond the window at either side, to allow room for the curtains to be drawn back off the window during the day.

To optimise the light from your window, we recommend your pole extend approximately 12" inches either side of the window for goblet and tab-headed curtains.

Width

Measure the track or pole and NOT the window itself.

Measure the width of a track from end to end (see diagram 1). If the track overlaps in the middle you must include the overlap (see diagram 2)

Measure the width of a pole between the decorative finials (see diagram 3).

Length

For tracks, measure from the top of track to allow it to be hidden by the curtains (see diagram 4).

For poles, measure from the underside of the curtain ring to allow the pole to be seen above the curtains (see diagram 5).

For eyelet curtains, measure from the top of the pole and add approximately 1.5" inches.

For tab-headed curtains, measure from the top of the pole. To miminise light exposure we recommend you position your pole a minimum of 6" inches above the top of the window.

Measure from the correct top position to the correct bottom positions (see diagram 6).

Fabric for Blinds

Blinds can sit either inside or outside a window recess. It's important to decide which you want before taking your measurements.

When measuring, please measure to the nearest quarter-inch for roller blinds, and approximately half-inch for roman blinds.

Please note that with some fabric design patterns, it will be difficult to perfectly align the design straight across the width - due to that reason we suggest you select plain or simple pattern fabrics for such blinds.

Inside the Window Recess

Measure the length from the top to the bottom of the recess.

Measure the width at the top of the window recess, where the blind is to be fitted.

Measure the width at two other points of the recess, i.e. in the middle and at the bottom (see diagram 7). Record the lowest measurement of the three to ensure the blind does not snag when being lowered.

Please remember that blinds with headings are not suitable for fitting inside a recess. Please remember to adjust the amount required accordingly.

Outside the Window Recess

To obtain the length, measure from the required position above the window down to the required length.

To obtain the width, measure the width of the window and add approximately 14cm to allow sufficient overlap at each side of the window.

Fabric for Pelmets

As a guide, to determine the pelmet length, divide the curtain length by six (e.g. length of curtains ordered 95" inches, recommended pelmet length 16" inches.

For pelmet width, measure the distance between the wall and the front of the pelmet track along the length (b) and back to the wall (c), then add together (see diagram 9).

For the fixed swag and tails two measurements are required:

Width - Measure the width of the pole between the decorative finials.

Length - The length is measured from the top of the pole to the lowest point of tails (see diagram 10).

For an arched pelmet, the finished pelmet length measurement is taken from the top of the pelmet track to the midpoint (i.e. at the top of the arch). Pelmet sides will be 8" inches longer (see diagram 11).
